Lori, Cynthia & Ryan with Travis & Dennis as their pushers in Texas April 29th, 2012
We wanted to begin by saying Thank You to more friends from Michigan! Mr. & Mrs. Harrett, whom I’ve (Stephanie) have known since I was a wee-little one & another good friend Lori Lautenbach. Thank you for your generosity & kindness. You are really making a difference in the lives of many through Athletes in Tandem!
We truly cannot believe the marathon is soon to be here! We’ve had an exciting past few weeks filled with massages, new physical therapists & delightful taper runs. Packet pick-up for the race begins on Friday, where we will get to learn about using our race chips (either on our shoes or on our bibs), meet other racers & find out what kind of good freebies (usually energy bars or GU type supplements & of course our commemorative race shirts!) are stashed in the bag.
Graham, as we’ve mentioned in earlier posts, has been having difficulty running with an IT band injury & has been treated in physical therapy at his school for 3 months now. He recently decided to check out a highly recommended physical therapist, Terry Gebhardt PT, DPT, over at the Colorado Physical Therapy Specialists just to see if he might have any other diagnosis or recommendations for him before Graham tries to run the marathon. The visit turned out to be more than any of us could have expected! He believed that Graham had somewhat of a pinched nerve in his back that was contributing to the pain he was experiencing. So he completed what’s called “dry needling,” which is similar to acupuncture but the needle goes down into the muscle & the therapist can manipulate how he moves it in order to release the muscle. Sorry, that may be too much information for you, but it is quite interesting if you’ve never heard of it before. Below is a short video to help explain it a bit more & it was produced by CBS.
This has made a WORLD of difference for Graham & he has felt immediate relief & has great hopes of being able to actually finish the marathon! That has been the most exciting news for us around here, that’s for sure. He will be heading back in for another treatment before the marathon as well. Also, CONGRATULATIONS to Chris & Mena Tuttle as they will be having their first child today, hopefully by the time this publishes & also to Graham on being an Uncle for the first time!
Our schedule for this week has been pretty great. On Saturday we finished our long run of 10 miles, Sunday was a fantastic rest day although we worked a lot outside on our gardens, Monday we jogged 5 miles & then completed some light weight lifting & today, Tuesday, we will be cross training (doing something other than running), Wednesday will be another 4 mile run, Thursday will be a cross train or 4 mile run, Friday we will rest, Saturday 2 mile run & the Sunday the MARATHON!

Athletes in Tandem has been participating in many events around Colorado & Texas.
-April 29th Dennis & Travis were paired with Cynthia, Lori & Ryan in the HITS Marbles Falls Triathlon in Texas (pictured at the top of the page). These are all NEW athletes that are participating with AiT because of the new collaboration with Spinal Bifida Texas. AiT is looking forward to reaching out to more athletes this organization has & to participate in more events this season!
-The Horsetooth Half Marathon (http://www.horsetoothhalfmarathon.com) took place on April 22nd & AiT had a fantastic number of participant that ran. There were 8 (Mallory, Jessie Wilburn, Greg & Lindsay Edwards, Wendy Mader, Dennis Vanderheiden, Travis, & Rob Damien) athletes that pushed 6 (Libby & James, P.J., David, Zachary & Nick) other extraordinary athletes through the race.

Here are a few more pictures to sum up the event.
Athletes in Tandem is anxiously awaiting admittance into the participation of United Way’s 2012 Larimer County Combined Federal Campaign. This determination of inclusion allows AiT to be eligible to receive funds through the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) through workplace giving. How AWESOME is that! If you live & work within Larimer County, you will be able to choose to donate a portion of your earnings to Athletes in Tandem directly from your check!
Thank you again to everyone who has supported us in our efforts in raising funds for Athletes in Tandem & completing our first marathon! We will be posting again before the marathon with our fabulous t-shirts that have all of our sponsors on them & just so you know what were wearing so that you can look for us & cheer if you happen to see us flying through the course on Sunday!
